The Acai Berry Diet
Overview

The Acai Berry Diet is not really a diet as such. Rather, it is an emphasis on incorporating the nutritionally-packed acai berry into your daily diet in a variety of ways.

Acai Berry Diet Background

The acai berry (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) is a small, round, deep purple fruit similar in appearance to a grape.

acai berry diet The berry grows on the acai tree which is a type of palm tree native to the South American rainforest, most commonly found in Brazil. Its taste makes you think of chocolate and berries!

The acai berry contains concentrated levels of anthocyanins – a powerful family of antioxidants that assists in neutralizing the harmful effects free radicals can have on your body. For years, blueberries have been considered a great source of antioxidants, which they are.

Studies have shown that the acai berry, particularly in freeze-dried powder form, provides 10% higher antioxidant effect than blueberries.

From a nutritional standpoint, the acai berry is packed with:

  • Antioxidants
  • Phytonutrients
  • Amino acids
  • Vitamins and trace minerals
  • Essential fatty acids
These nutritional characteristics of the acai berry reportedly contribute to improving your immune system and disease prevention.

Although the nutritional and health benefits of the acai berry have long been recognized in many South American countries, it has only more recently been recognized outside of South America. In fact, the health benefits and nutrient-dense characteristics of the acai berry have prompted Dr. Nicholas Perricone to include it as one of his 10 Super Foods on the Oprah website!

Packaged acai berry products may still be somewhat difficult to find in your local grocery store but they are becoming more widely available as the acai berry gains popularity and are readily available online.

How Do You Incorporate Acai Berry into Your Diet?
The most common ways to add acai to your diet are by drinking acai berry juice, making smoothies or “energy bowls” with acai berry products, as well as acai berry supplements.

In addition to supplements, ready-to-drink acai berry juices, and the whole berry, there are various forms of acai berry products that make it easy to add to recipes like smoothies.

For example, you can find frozen acai pulp, pulp puree or freeze-dried acai berry powder. The main thing is to look for natural acai berry products that do not include many other ingredients. The most nutrient-dense form of acai for adding to recipes is the freeze-dried powder, but the frozen pulp or puree is great for blending in a smoothie or a thicker dessert-like energy bowl.

Sample Acai Berry Smoothie Recipe

100 gram package of frozen acai pulp (or puree)
    1/2 cup frozen strawberries
    1/2 cup plain low-fat (or non-fat) yogurt
    1 frozen banana
    1/4 cup orange juice
Mix in blender on medium speed until smooth. Add additional orange juice to make thinner or additional frozen berries to make thicker.

Acai Berry Diet Conclusion
The nutritional and health benefits of the acai berry have become more and more broadly recognized and accepted by the medical and health community. Incorporating it as part of a healthier eating and exercise regimen to achieve your weight loss goals is certainly something worth considering. However, relying on the nutritional benefits of the acai berry as a weight loss “diet” is not likely to be very effective by itself.
